The sanctuary of our church is becoming known to a growing number of musicians in the Houston area. In one of its publicity brochures, the Foundation for Modern Music called it, “the charming and acoustically excellent hall of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church.” The art song group Col Canto has regular concerts here, and we are also the home of the renaissance choral ensemble the Piping Rock Singers.
The sanctuary houses a Knabe grand piano, which was discovered and lovingly restored by the noted composer and pianest Robert Avalon during his tenure as accompianist for the church. After his untimely death, the church purchased it from his estate and it continues to enrich our worship, as well as provide a fine quality instrument for the concert venue. A Kawai baby grand is available in the fellowship hall for small recitals and rehearsals.
